Schools in Port Elizabeth and East London are being challenged to collect all old telephone directories to qualify for three main prizes of R5000, R3000 or R2000.
In addition each participating school will receive R0.50 for every old telephone directory collected.
Also, each participating school who collects a minimum of 500 old telephone directories, will receive a tree to be planted at a ceremony after the closing of the competition.
And, in a nod to the fact that the Yellow Pages Directories seem to getting thinner, each school can earn an extra R0.50 per kilogram for additional white paper collected.
This recycling initiative closes for PE Schools on 3 February 2017 and East London Schools on 17 February 2017.
Organiser Mary Phillips, MD of Waste Takers says; “Recycling has become the BUZZ word in the 21st century as more and more individuals, organisations and schools are doing the responsible thing by disposing of their waste in an environmentally friendly manner in order to save our planet for generations to come.”
Learners who collect 200 or more books each, will receive a prize.
