Dear Alan
Perhaps as an outsider I see things more subjectively, but I think that the fact that the big bucks in Cape Town and Johannesburg are prepared to invest very heavily in P.E. should be seen as a wake-up call to the “money” in P.E.
I am sure I have mentioned this before but at risk of repeating myself, my experience of too many Algoans is that they are very quick to run P.E. down at the drop of a hat. In my opinion they cannot see the wood for the trees and they certainly seem to be unable to grasp the fact that not only are they living in the best city in S.A. but also one in which there is economic growth better than anywhere else.
If the Cape Town architects can see financial benefit in opening an office in P.E. then why can’t the old, established, existing architects see the opportunities and project themselves as competent enough to handle projects competently? Business is a dog eat dog world. Please don’t misunderstand me – I am not looking to argue with you and the entire issue is not as simplistic as I have put it – but the negativeness that rears it’s head too often amongst Algoans sticks in my craw. I would give a boot-full of right arms to be able to come back and live in, and be a part of driving the positive dynamics of, beautiful Port Elizabeth.
Have a great day, pal.
Lance
Editor: In a private e-mail around the NMBT using business outside PE I mentioned to Lance that a Cape Town Architectural firm had recently opened a branch in Port Elizabeth on the back of heavy investment in a mega shopping mall. This is Lance’s reply which again got me feeling very proud (actually smug!) of Port Elizabeth and her citizens.
