Learners across the Eastern Cape will be starting the school year in 17 newly built schools thanks to the Department of Education Eastern Cape commitment to improve the learning and teaching environments for pupils.
The Coega Development Corporation (CDC), which is the implementing agent for several projects on behalf of the Department of Basic Education, announced today that it has delivered 17 schools of 25 Infrastructure Upliftment Programmes across the Eastern Cape.
The CDC took on the construction of 25 schools in the Eastern Cape as part of the government-led Accelerated Schools Infrastructure Delivery Initiative (ASIDI).
Sophumelela Senior Primary School in Keiskammahoek, Mtingwevu Senior Primary School in Cofimvaba and Lugongqoza Junior Secondary School in Qumbu were opened by Mandla Makupula, MEC for Education Eastern Cape, last year.
Schools expected to be completed in the first six months of this year include Nomzamo Madikizela Mandela /Thornhil Primary School in Port Elizabeth (R25-million), Nkanti Senior Public School in Ntabankulu (R17-million), Bomvini Senior Public School in Libode (R18-million) and Mayibenye Junior Secondary School in Qumbu (R21-million).
The remaining four schools Andrieskraal in Patensie, Dumezweni and Mbombo in Qumbu and Madlalisa in Mt Frere will start later this year.
Mbulelo Jokazi, CDC DoE unit programme manager said, “Construction at these four schools will include new classrooms, admin blocks, a media centre, a science laboratory, nutrition centers, multi-purpose classes, fencing, electrical installation, water and sanitation, walkways, parking and assembly areas.”
Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC head of marketing and communications said “Schools play a critical role in shaping a better life for society. Properly functioning schools also equip society to improve its livelihood.
“For the CDC, it is not just about the brick and mortar, but the outcomes of infrastructural development that will reduce poverty, unemployment and inequalities through education and training of our nation.
“The CDC along with government aims to bring positive transformation in the education sector for the Eastern Cape through better schooling facilities to children in the province,” said Dr Vilakazi.
