R40m Singaphi Street Environmental upgrade Completed

8 December 2018 By Alan Straton

The Mandela Bay Development Agency and community celebrated the completion of the R40 million Singaphi Street environmental upgrade programme in New Brighton on Thursday (06 Dec). “This project is the first major intervention by the MBDA to the townships of Nelson Mandela Bay since the Agency was established primarily to focus on Central Business District rejuvenation”, said MBDA Spokesperson, Luvuyo Bangazi.

Speaking to the community, MBDA’s engineer representative and SME’s coordinator, Giovanni Taft said, “the ground work that was started in 2014 at Singaphi is a true testament of MBDA’s vision in developing an iconic world-class ocean city, showcasing its diversity of people, culture, heritage and environment”. “I have learnt exceedingly about building supportive community structure to triumph the injustices of the past”, said Taft.

The MBDA celebrated the milestone with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) which have been integral in the delivery of the project. SME’s working on the environmental upgrade were inspired by the Route 67 development in the inner city. The Agency ensured that 15 local SME contractors have benefited with over R11m worth of contracts carried out by locals. Founder of Zinzile Trading, Mzukisi Dyani said, “we are grateful to have been part of such an uplifting, important project that raised the standard; people of the community can now exercise and have a safe space to learn and host recreational activities”.

The community of New Brighton expressed genuine gratitude towards the MBDA for providing them with opportunities of growth. The Singaphi Street upgrades include a newly surfaced road from Ferguson Road up to Olaf Palme Street. The environmental upgrading of Singaphi street also includes Public Art, Street Furniture, Children’s Play Parks, Traffic Education Cycling Park a Sports Training Park as well as possibilities for vendor trading areas and landscaping.
