R300 000 Support for Ubuntu Education Fund

Absa announced today that its partnership with the Ubuntu Education Fund will receive a further R300 000 injection in support of orphans and vulnerable children in the Zwide area of the Nelson Mandela Metro.

The Ubuntu Education Fund adopts an integrated system of educational, social and health interventions in disadvantaged communities. Over the past 10 years, the Ubuntu Education Fund has developed programmes that focus on empowering vulnerable children by addressing the needs of an entire household.

This approach has proven to be most effective in stabilising homes, providing much-needed healthcare, reducing violence as well as the effects of neglect and poverty.

“The Zwide community continues to face great difficulties in overcoming poverty and Absa’s goal is to help the children to access academic and economic opportunities in answer to life’s challenges,” says Mihloti Mathye, Absa Corporate Social Investment (CSI) General Manager.

“Ubuntu’s approach entails a series of interventions and its impact can only be achieved through long-term and sustained support. Absa is proud to be a partner in this initiative,” added Mathye.

“Gcobani Zonke, Deputy President of the Ubuntu Education Fund, says: “We are proud to be partnering with an institution like Absa. The bank’s commitment to providing educational support to the disadvantaged communities of South Africa is in line with the Ubuntu Education Fund’s mission.

“For the past six years, our organisations have joined forces to empower orphans and vulnerable children to lead healthy lives, thrive academically and gain access to opportunities.  We look forward to an even longer partnership that will continue to change the lives of South Africa’s youth.”

Absa has supported the Ubuntu Education Fund since 2005, with cumulative funding currently exceeding R1 million.
