R130 000 CBD counterfeit good bust

On Monday 26th of May, the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) rangers reported on a successful Anti-piracy raid carried out in the Port Elizabeth Central Business District (CBD). The ranger team of four that pounced on the traders  included MBDA ranger, Sicelo Zalabe, recently appointed tourist safety ambassadors and security guards who confiscated over 1000 DVD’s and CD’s with an estimated value of over R130 000.00.

The confiscated goods have now been handed over to the South African Police Service, Humewood branch, and a docket opened.

The MBDA is tasked with maintaining a clean, safe and fair trading environment in Govan Mbeki Avenue through a permit system.

Commenting on the success of the raid, MBDA Spokesperson, Luvuyo Bangazi says “According to the Southern African Federation against Copyright Theft, the music industry in South Africa loses up to R500 Million each year to pirated music. So this is just one small dent we have made and we plan to sustain it for the long term. The MBDA is sending a strong message to illegal traders – your time is up in Govan Mbeki Avenue”.
