Questionable Medical Ethics

The Eastern Cape Health Department unexpectedly reneged on their commitment to provide a year’s supply of enzymes to Arlene Scheepers (5) who is suffering from the fatal Gaucher’s Disease.

Arlene’s family lives in the Vastrap informal settlement in the Northern areas of Port Elizabeth and cannot afford the life-saving enzymes.

After requests by the DA, the Eastern Cape Health Department agreed to supply the medicine at a cost of R48 000. On 25 June 2015 Dr Qangule, the CEO of the Dora Nginza Hospital, signed for the procurement of the Enzyme that will save Alrene’s life.

However, on Tuesday 30 June 2015, the Scheepers family was informed that the DOH is reneging on the deal because of the cost of the Enzymes.

I believe the reversal of a decision to provide a lifesaving drug to a 5 year old is absolutely unethical and unforgivable. The DA is networking countrywide to reverse this decision and is in conversation with our lawyers.

I appeal to all citizens to also express their outrage loudly and clearly.

The DA will not rest until Arlene swallows her first dose of enzymes.
