Quartz or Solid Surface? Plastone in Randburg Templates and Fits Both, With Seams, Edges and Sink Cut-Outs Planned Before the Slab Is Cut

RANDBURG, South Africa – Most kitchen renovations reach the same question late in the process: quartz or solid surface. Plastone, a countertop fabricator in Strijdom Park, Randburg, makes both, and has published its range of quartz and solid-surface countertops to help homeowners, office fit-out teams and shopfitters choose before the cabinets go in.

Two materials, different strengths

Engineered quartz is dense and hard wearing, and Plastone cuts it in 20 mm for kitchens and vanities and 30 mm for islands and breakfast counters, in polished or matte finishes. Solid surface comes in 12 mm sheet or with a built-up front edge, polished or satin. It suits curved shapes, coved upstands and vanities with integrated basins, and light marks can often be renewed on site. Quartz holds its looks with a sensible cleaning routine and some care around hot pots.

Edges include straight, pencil round, bevel, sharknose for handleless cabinets and full bullnose for family kitchens. Islands can carry a waterfall end down to the floor. The same workshop makes splashbacks, window cills, reception counters, shop counters and bar tops.

Where the job is decided

“A countertop is won or lost at the template, not at the saw,” said Plastone’s senior templater. “Walls in older Joburg houses are seldom straight. If we measure properly and put the seam where it belongs, nobody notices it. If we guess, it is the first thing everyone sees when they walk into the kitchen.”

Templating covers wall lines, cabinet positions, overhangs and appliance openings, with digital measuring for uneven walls and slab layout planning to reduce waste. Undermount and drop-in sink cut-outs, hob cut-outs, tap holes and drainer grooves are cut from the actual appliance and basin sizes. Seams on L and U shaped runs are placed for strength and to keep the pattern balanced.

Plastone fits across Gauteng, including Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria, Midrand, Fourways, Centurion and Roodepoort. Homeowners and contractors can send a layout through the Plastone website.
