Province spends R91 million on accident-damaged state vehicles

22 November 2019 By Port Elizabethan

Editor: Let’s help our ‘safe driving challenged’ and accident prone government employees to drive like human beings – feel free to censure anyone that you see abusing a state vehicle. Ask yourself – would you allow someone to take cash out of your pocket and tear it up in front of you? If the answer is “No” then have at our state employees abusing our tax contributions…..

Dear MyPE

The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has spent in excess of R91-million on accident-damaged state-owned vehicles over the past three years.

This level of wastage is completely unacceptable and raises serious concerns about the misuse and abuse of state-owned vehicles by officials.

In response to a parliamentary question, Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana, revealed that over the past three financial years, the province had written off vehicles collectively valued at over R28,622 million.

The province had also spent an additional R63,150 million on repairing accident damaged vehicles over the same time period.
MEC Tikana said the province had only claimed back R3,801 million from officials who had been found to be negligent, or who had not been authorised to make use of the provincially owned vehicle at the time of the accident.

I will be writing to MEC Tikana, and the Eastern Cape’s Standing Committee On Public Accounts (SCOPA) requesting that the Department of Transport do a presentation, and provide a report on each accident, with the view of recovering costs of damages from officials where they have been at fault.

We have to tighten our belts and stop the abuse and wastage of state resources.

Regards
