Proteas Defeated in Durban

India sealed a 21-run defeat against the Proteas in an official Twenty20 international, which took place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Sunday’s match was also a send-off for South African cricket star, Makhaya Ntini, who represented his country for the final time.

A concert to celebrate the 150 year anniversary of Indian arrival in South Africa was held after the game.

India won the toss and made 168 for six in their innings. Rohit Sharma boosted the Indian score card with his 50 off 32 balls and was dismissed for 53 after being caught by Ntini.

Morne van Wyk’s contribution of 67 runs may have failed to help the Proteas defeat the visiting nation but it was the fastest 50 by a South African in Twenty20 cricket.

Van Wyk’s innings were brought to an end after being caught by Ashish Nehra on the deep square leg boundary.

Proteas’ captain Johan Botha was the only other South African to make a decent score with his 25 run knock. South Africa only managed to reach 147 runs.

Although Ntini did not make any significant contribution to the Durban fixture, having conceded 46 runs in his four overs, he did, however, receive a standing ovation during his final over.

The Chevrolet Warriors paceman, Ntini, last played for South Africa in December 2009 after the second Test against England.

The “Mdingi Express” played 101 Test matches and 173 one day internationals (ODIs) for his country.

The two sides will now focus their attention on the forthcoming ODIs that will start on Wednesday at the Sahara Stadium Kingsmead.

The four other games will be played in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth on 21 January 2011 and Centurion. Kemantha Govender – BuaNews
