Propella Recognized as a Clean Tech Hub, Driving Innovation in the Eastern Cape

Propella has been selected as one of nine (9) implementing partners supporting TIA across South Africa, with only two (2) partners based in the Eastern Cape. As an implementing partner, Propella is collaborating with TIA to deliver pre-accelerator, accelerator, and post-accelerator support, contributing to the growth of the national innovation ecosystem. This partnership reaffirms Propella’s dedication to driving sustainability and technological advancement in the Eastern Cape.

Propella’s Senior Industrial Advisor and Industrial Engineer, Grant Minnie, says, “This partnership comes at a crucial time as the global and Eastern Cape communities face mounting environmental challenges. The TIA and GCIP-SA partnership supports the urgent need for clean tech innovation to deliver sustainable solutions in energy efficiency, waste beneficiation, clean water, green buildings, and renewable energy.

Empowering Innovation: The TIA, GCIP-SA, and NGIN Partnership Background

GCIP-SA is part of a global initiative aimed at promoting cleantech innovations to support entrepreneurs in growing their Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and startups into viable, investment ready businesses. In South Africa, GCIP was incorporated into TIA early in 2018 after operating as a donor funded project by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). TIA, as the National Project Execution Entity for GCIP-SA, contracted by UNIDO, is supported by the Global Project Execution Entities: The Network for Global Innovation (NGIN), and the Cleantech Group (CTG).

The Technology Innovation Agency and The Network for Global Innovation: Driving Industry Growth

The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) is mandated through the TIA Act to promote the development and exploitation of discoveries, inventions, and innovations. Its goal is to improve economic growth and enhance the quality of life for all South Africans by bridging the gap between research and commercialization. TIA has been a driving force in South Africa’s innovation ecosystem for 17 years, playing a crucial role in advancing groundbreaking technologies.

“TIA is committed to acting as a system curator, bringing together key players in the cleantech ecosystem, by fostering collaboration and providing strategic guidance, we are empowering our innovation centres in operationalising the hubs and spokes models to achieve greater impact and contribute to South Africa’s cleantech ecosystem.” says TIA’s Acting Executive for Innovation, Vusi Skosana, who is also a part of TIA’s GCIP-S.A management team.

The Network for Global Innovation (NGIN) is a hybrid nonprofit built by entrepreneurs whose mission is to slow climate change by empowering climate technology entrepreneurs to get their inventions into the marketplace faster and more effectively. Conceived at the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator, recognized as one of the world’s leading innovation hub, NGIN has been instrumental in positioning Los Angeles as a global leader in clean tech innovation. Formally established as a standalone organization in 2018, NGIN continues to drive impactful change by supporting cutting-edge clean tech solutions worldwide.

In 2025, Propella marks 10 years as a key player in the technology innovation space, having successfully incubated 300 ICT, Industrial, and Creative sector projects. The incubator has equipped entrepreneurs and startups with hands-on support, including business mentorship, prototyping facilities, access to technical expertise, and market entry strategies. Through tailored business development programs and access to funding opportunities, Propella has enabled innovators to bring groundbreaking solutions to market — fostering sustainability and driving green economic growth in the Eastern Cape and beyond.

How to Get Involved: Application Process and Program Details

The Global Cleantech Innovation Program (GCIP) is designed to guide participants from the initial stages of startup development, through to growth and scaling, with a structured pathway consisting of four phases: Pre-Acceleration, Incubation, Acceleration, and Post-Acceleration.
