Join Port Elizabeth and MyPE in congratulating Mover and Shaker, Prof Richard Cowling from NMMU:
With the world’s ecosystems increasingly under threat, the work of National Research Foundation A1-researcher botany professor Richard Cowling becomes increasingly important.
The 2009 recipient of the prestigious Gold Medal from the Southern Africa Association for the Advancement of Science is one of the world’s leading authorities in conservation science. Working closely with stakeholders, other scientists and postgraduate students, Prof Cowling has mapped the locality of Eastern Cape “ecosystem services” – nature’s services to man – and identified strategies to safeguard them.
He is also part of a team of scientists spearheading a unique project, in which spekboom – a hardy succulent shrub with an extraordinary ability to store carbon – is being planted in degraded veld in several nature reserves, and 300 trial plots across the Eastern Cape.
Professor Richard Cowling was honoured at a special event at the university on the evening of 5 November 2012 as a Distinguished Professor, and will maintain the special title for at least five years.
For the first time in Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s history, five professors were recognised as Distinguished Professors in recognition of the significant contribution they have made within their field and to the university.
The five Distinguished Professors, selected by a screening committee, are; Mark Watson (psychology), Richard Cowling (botany), Rossouw von Solms (information technology), Bert Olivier (philosophy) and Danie Hattingh (automotive engineering).
