Productivity SA Chairperson appointed co-chair B20 Germany:

The Chairman of Productivity SA, Mr Mthunzi Mdwaba, has been appointed as a Co-Chairman of the B20 (Business) Germany Task Force on Education and Employment. Mr Mdwaba will be in Berlin, Germany from 30 November until 3 December 2016 for the sitting of the B20.

The B20 is an integral part of the G20 process. The B20 presidency rotates annually and is a role played by the President of the country it is in. The G20 China, just completed its year and handed over to the G20 Germany. The B20 as the business vehicle does the same, with various Task Forces for different parts of the economy. The Task Force on Education and Employment is one of the Task Forces dealing with one of the most pressing challenges facing the economies of the world today, including the top 20 countries that make up the G20.

Mr Mdwaba has been involved with the B20 since its inception in France and all the countries that have presided over same in the last 8 years. The G20 is the premier forum for international economic cooperation. Within the G20, the leading industrial and emerging economies as well as the European Union coordinate their policies and agree on joint actions and principles.

The G20 member countries combined hold more than 85 percent of the global economic output. Meanwhile B20 Germany which is part of G20 aims to address challenges associated with rapid technological development, the re-skilling needed for rapidly shifting job markets, and the structural reforms needed for more and better employment opportunities. South Africa is the only African member of the G20. Mdwaba says “he looks forward to partaking in the B20 and looks forward to a term underpinned by pragmatism, implementation and monitoring”.

The B20’s task is to support the G20 by making concrete recommendations for actions, consolidating global businesses’ interests and lending its expertise to the G20. In 2015, the number of globally unemployed people reached 197.1 million, an increase of 1 million from 2014, and 27 million above the preglobal financial crises level. The Chair of the B20 is Dr. Gerhard Braun, Vice President of the Confederation of German Employers’ Associations (BDA).

  • David Lakobachvili, President, Orion Heritage Company.
  • Erol Kiresepi, Vice President, Turkish Confederation of Employer Associations (T?SK)
  • Zhang Lei, Founder & CEO, Hillhouse Capital
  • Yogendra Modi, Executive Chairman, Great Eastern Energy Corporation Ltd.
