In contrast with the coach of our other suffering national team – Allister Coetzee, who spent time in our neck of the woods teaching and coaching – SA’s National Cricket Team Coach, Russell Domingo has come in for some well deserved praise from the pen of the Daily Maverick’s Antoinette Muller.
Muller seems to ‘get’ Domingo who epitomises the Eastern Cape pioneering spirit, quiet determination and the patience to build a team with few resources. After all Domingo was part of the Dave Emslie team that brought great accolades to the Chevrolet Warriors – achievements that took many years of patience and focus on an end goal.
The patience must come from Domingo’s love of fishing.
Muller says in her intro; “In January 2016, Russell Domingo was a man under fire. South African cricket looked like it would keep on sliding down the drain after a host of big-name retirements and two big series losses. The coach was always at pains to stress that this was merely a transitional phase. Not everybody bought that. Now everybody is buying humble pie.”
Local scribes know Domingo as a quiet and intense man with a lovely smile and a naughty twinkle in his eye and it gives me great personal pleasure to see him getting such great recognition from Antoinette Muller.
