Port Elizabeth Classifieds – Seller and Buyer Beware

8 June 2011 By Alan Straton

The MyPE Classified Ads section offers an easy way for you to place a free classified advert/s that will stay live for 90 days. After 90 days you may re-submit your ad.

You have heard all the scary stories of people who’ve been robbed blind after responding to or placing an ad for second-hand goods or services. Very often you’ve been sold an urban legend. You know those weird and crazy things that always seem to happen to a “friend of a friend” of the person telling you the story?

Follow these basic rules when transacting via any Classified Advert:

  1. Whether you are buyer or seller, always arrange to meet the other party in person, in a public place during the day. No matter how convenient it may seem, it’s never a wise idea to invite strangers into your home; and nor is it a good idea to meet someone in a dark alley when you know that they know that you’re likely to be carrying a large amount of cash.
  2. Don’t carry large sums of cash when going to meet a seller (or ever, really, if you can help it). If you’re buying a big-ticket item, rather go with the seller to the bank and do an EFT once you’ve both agreed to the sale. Banks have security cameras, which should give you some peace of mind.
  3. If you’re buying an item that carries some kind of ownership or authenticity certificate, such as a car or a diamond ring, make sure that you get the certificate at the same time as the item itself. Never allow the seller to fob you off with promises of sending it to you later. They may not necessarily mean to cheat you out of what is rightfully yours, but these promises can be very easy to forget once the deal has been sealed and the money has changed hands.
  4. Research the item offered for sale and ‘Google’ the item title, the seller’s e-mail address and phone number to see if other buyers have commented on the seller (or buyer for that matter).
  5. We ask sellers to provide details such as a landline, cellphone, suburb and city in order to help buyers with the verification process. Obviously we encourage you to rather deal with local (Port Elizabeth) sellers which should provide you with far more comfort.

Remember that if something sounds too good to be true then it probably is!

The MyPE sellers are required to register an account with MyPE which then verifies to you and MyPE that the sellers have legitimate e-mail accounts.

The small print: MyPE makes no warranties or representations and bears no responsibility of any nature concerning goods, services or otherwise advertised here. All adverts displayed here are accepted for publication in good faith. Preference will be given to adverts sourced from within the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan region (Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage, Despatch, Colchester). Placement of adverts is at our sole discretion and we do not guarantee to place any advert submitted.

If you have a LARGE number of adverts you want to place – jobs, cars, houses, second hand goods etc. then contact ALAN for a solution.
