In a PSL Absa Premiership match, played at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Sunday 30 October, a late goal three minutes before the end of time, by substitute Tokelo Rantie saw Orlando Pirates beat Jomo Cosmos 2-1, wrecking their chances to yet win a game in the PSL this season.
Orlando Pirates now move up to fifth on the table.
Cosmos opened the scoring in the 29th minute when Siyabonga Nonyshinga slipped past his opposite number and slotted the ball home from a few metres out. Pandemonium broke out as Cosmos and Chiefs fans roared their approval.
With Pirates dominating possession this looked to be a match that would be won (or lost) on the team best able to capitalise on mistakes.
Mistakes, maybe, but we had not reckoned on a good solid Oscar worthy performance from Rudolph Bester who, in the dying seconds of the first 45, took advantage of Cosmos defender Lehlohonolo Nonyane and a myopic Bryce Lawrence lookalike ref by diving in the box to earn a penalty. Isaac Chansa then slotted the ball home in the top right corner.
Out for the second half at 1-1 Cosmos tried to go one up and missed a few chances but experience and probably a lot more support from an enthusiastic crowd saw Pirates substitute Tokelo Ranite, in the 85th minute, claim a long ball just outside the 18-yard box, drive into the box to beat one defender and score to hand the victory to Pirates.
Into extra time and Pirates dominated possession until the final whistle. 2-1 to Pirates.
The next PSL Soccer game at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium takes place on 1 November when Maritzburg United meet Kaizer Chiefs at 7:00 pm – expect a lot of sick notes on Wednesday!
Editor’s Notes: The Longhair and I are pretty embarrassed to say that this was our first time to watch live local soccer at the stadium. We could become huge fans, though.
