People Will Say We’re In Love

24 January 2011 By Alan Straton

The Port Elizabeth Gilbert & Sullivan Society is excited to announce auditions for their major production in 2011, the timeless classic Oklahoma!. Award winning Director Robin Williams will once again head the Production Team and joining her will be Shawn Lyon as Musical Director and Candice Johnstone as Choreographer. This family show calls for people of all ages, singers, dancers, actors and backstage crew to come along, audition and join in the fun both on and off the stage.

Oklahoma

The audition process begins with an Orientation on Saturday 5th February, 14:00, at the Savoy Theatre, cnr of Diaz and Stirk Roads, Adcockvale. Everyone interested in auditioning as well as anyone who would like to be involved in set building, backstage or technical crew is encouraged to attend. Orientations are a wonderful opportunity to find out more about the show, especially if you haven’t been lucky enough to see it on stage. It’s your chance to meet the Production Team and find out what they are looking for as well as getting information about the various roles and how to best prepare for your audition. Potential Crew can meet our Technical Manager, Paula Martin and learn more about working on the set or backstage. Audition Packages and sheet music for the principal roles will be available and you can also book a time for your vocal audition.

Oklahoma! features several major roles such as Curly, Laurey, Ado Annie, Will Parker and Aunt Eller as well as many other speaking, dancing and singing roles. Auditions will be held over the 18th and 19th February at Grey High School. Vocal auditions will take place on the 18th February from 18:30. Auditionees for the ensemble are required to prepare one song which shows off their vocal ability. Anyone auditioning for the principal roles will be required to sing specific songs as outlined in the Audition Package. An audition pianist will be available as well as a CD player for backing tracks. The following day will be the dance/movement auditions which begin at 15:00. Everyone is required to attend both the singing and dance/movement auditions.

Oklahoma! tells the story of a handsome cowboy winning the heart of a headstrong farm girl in Oklahoma territory at the turn of the 20th Century and has entranced theatre-goers for generations. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s award-winning score includes “I’m Just a Girl Who Cain’t Say No,” “The Farmer and the Cowman”, “People Will Say We’re In Love,” and “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning.” This much loved musical premiered in 1943 and was a box office smash, running for an unprecedented 2,212 performances. There have been many revivals over the years including the acclaimed 1998 London production starring Hugh Jackman and the show has been a huge hit with audiences time after time.

For any questions or further information, or to request an Audition package, contact Shan Sabbadin (Production Secretary) on 082 778 7705.

To get a head start on all the other Port Elizabeth thespians vying for a spot in the cast of Oklahoma pop along to Kalahari.net and purchase a Special Edition DVD of Oklahoma for R98.95. The Oklahoma DVD above is ripe with classics: “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “The Surrey With The Fringe On Top,” “People Will Say We’re In Love,” “Oklahoma” and many more. This was the first Rodgers and Hammerstein collaboration, starting the most successful creative partnership in the history of musical theater.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
