PE-based company hosts outdoor event

RGT Smart, the market intelligence solutions provider to the automotive sector based in Port Elizabeth, recently raised over R10 000 for the public benefits organisation, African Unity Foundation (AUF), at its recently held adventure day charity event in the Addo Zuurberg region of the Eastern Cape.

The AUF assists organisations to implement programmes in communities and provide the managerial skills in order for these programmes to be successful. Jaco van Staden, marketing manager at RGT Smart, says the company wanted to host a charity event that showcased the pristine nature of the Eastern Cape.

“Trail running and mountain biking are growing sports in South Africa, and we wanted to give people a fun day enjoying one of the top routes in the country that they would normally not experience.

“We chose to work with the African Unity Foundation because they contribute to sustainable solutions, aimed at alleviating poverty in Eastern Cape communities,” says van Staden.

The event, hosted for the first time by the company, combined trail running and a mountain bike challenge at Hayterdale near Addo. The route incorporated a 5km and 13km running trail, as well as a 25km mountain bike course. More than 170 people entered the first-time event and cash prizes were awarded to the winners in each category.

“One of the event highlights included a determined Cameron Hills – only nine years old – completing his first ever 25km mountain bike race in just under three hours. As the current reigning SA master champion of the 3000m steeplechase, the 13km Men’s trail run joint winner Roberltuis Matthys enthralled the crowd with his speed and RGT Smart wishes him well when he represents South Africa next year at the World Masters Track and Field Championship in Brazil,” concludes van Staden.
