The DA is delighted to announce that some 600 teachers appointed on a temporary basis in the province and who have not been paid since the beginning of this year, will receive their money on 15 May 2012.
This follows DA interaction between the DA and the acting Superintendent -General of the Department of Education, Mthunywa Ngonzo, on 3 May 2012 during a legislature portfolio committee meeting.
During a follow-up conversation between myself and Mr. Ngonzo this morning, he informed me that he was going to unlock the deadlocks which had prevented teachers from being paid and that the non-payment issues would be resolved by 15 May 2012.
The DA strongly condemns the actions by parents, teachers and learners at some schools in the province who have been disrupting education by demonstrating at schools during teaching hours. At Sanctor Senior Secondary in Port Elizabeth, for instance, parents and teachers burnt tyres at the school this morning. We cannot allow that our children are made cannon fodder in disputes between the Department of Education and teachers. Education is the foundation for a better life.
The DA believes that the wrong of the past can be redressed by improving education and by promoting those children with the potential to succeed.
