The fully electric Porsche Taycan deliveries will start taking place from the end of this year and already over 20 000 people have put down 2 500 Euros each to secure their places in the queue.
The Fully Charged Show was recently given exclusive access to get Jonny Smith behind the wheel of the new first Porsche all electric car – the Taycan – and drive it full throttle from 0-124 mph (200 km/h) dozens of times. Repeatability, a good test of a car’s efficiency and durability.
Jonny did over 30 hard launches to over 200 km/h to help prove the durability of the electric vehicle.
Prices for this Taycan Electric 800 Volt Model in the video below will be around £130 000 with cheaper versions kicking off at around £65 000 within 18 months of the car’s launch in late 2019.
During development of this EV Porsche engineers took advantage of the summer in the Southern Hemisphere and conducted performance tests in South Africa, along with final adjustments in terms of continuous performance and reproducibility. In Dubai they are carried out hot-climate endurance runs and tested battery charging under extreme conditions. The 30 countries across the globe in which these comprehensive tests were carried out have temperatures that range from minus 35 to plus 50 degree Celsius.
Figures from the Taycan testing phase:
- Overall distance covered: Approximately six million kilometres, of which two million were endurance run kilometres
- Countries: A total of 30, including the USA, China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Finland
- Temperatures: From minus 35 to plus 50 degree Celsius
- Air humidity: From 20 to 100 per cent
- Altitude: From 85 metres below to 3,000 metres above sea level
- Charging cycles: Over 100,000 using various charging technologies across the globe
- Development team: Around 1,000 test drivers, technicians and engineers
The Taycan accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in significantly less than 3.5 seconds. It has a range of more than 500 kilometres (according to the NEDC). The 800-V architecture in the vehicle guarantees that the lithium-ion battery can be recharged in just four minutes, providing enough energy to drive 100 kilometres (according to NEDC).
