Outlook for Accommodation Establishments Continues to be Dire

MyPE recently asked (through the kind assistance of PEMBBA) a number of local establishments to complete a survey on their occupational percentages for December 2020 as compared to December 2019.

The results (SO FAR) are below:

  • December 2019 Average Occupational Percentage was 57%
  • December 2020 Average Occupational Percentage was 24.125%

The comments reveal just how hard tourism has been hit by the Lockdowns:

  1. “Have recently accepted long term room rentals and am using access bond and retirement savings to keep afloat.”
  2. “Staff put on short time whilst offering huge discounts.”
  3. “We are now taking Covid-19 positive guests and only making use of casual staff on a needs basis.”
  4. “Had to close up for the entire month of December and lay off casual staff.”
  5. “Normalisation of business will only be realised once vaccine administration is well advanced and conditions are deemed to be safe enough to remove all Legislative Restrictions.”
  6. “December was reasonable as the result of a long term booking, however January is REALLY horrendous – 1 night booked for the whole month and NOTHING yet for February.”
  7. “We made a decision to only open for small group bookings.”
