Our national government will devolve police powers to the Kouga Municipality

27 May 2024 By Port Elizabethan

Dear Editor

[Listen to Andrew Whitfield MP speak on this]

The DA in the Eastern Cape held its final election rally in the Kruisfontein Civic Centre in Humansdorp, where hundreds of people came out to hear our message of hope before the 29 May National and Provincial Elections.

I was joined by DA Federal Leader, John Steenhuisen, DA EC Provincial Chairperson, Yusuf Cassim, Tsitsi-Kouga Constituency Leader, Dr Vicky Knoetze, and Kouga Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, in the Kouga Municipality, the only DA-governed municipality in the Eastern Cape. Kouga has become a beacon op hope in the province where services are delivered to all residents. (see pictures here, here, here and here)

Today we spoke about the DA’s plan to fight crime and to devolve policing powers from Pretoria to capable local and provincial governments, to ensure better policing on the streets of our communities. We can build a capable and professional police service in Kouga and that is what we are going to do.

The DA is committed to decentralising police services from national government. In Kouga we can employ our own police personnel and make sure that we put those functions in place to keep our communities safe. If we can deliver quality local government services, then we can also deliver national government services.

In South Africa more than 80 people are killed every single day. Last week the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, was too scared to release the crime statistics because he knows that every quarter statistics get worse.

When we devolve the police service the police will no longer be accountable to the crooks in cabinet, but to residents they vow to serve and protect.

After 29 May, when the DA takes over in the Union Buildings after 30 years of ANC government, we will implement this plan to Rescue South Africa from the violent criminals that are holding our residents to ransom.

Regards

Andrew Whitfield MP
DA EC Provincial Leader
