NMMU Madibaz striker Onela Beqezi is back at full strength for his second season of Varsity Football after being forced to sit most of the 2013 tournament out due to injury.
According to Beqezi, he surprised even himself when he scored the second goal that contributed to the Madibaz’s 3-0 victory over University of Limpopo in Port Elizabeth.
The first-year civil engineering student credited his goal to his strong tackling abilities, which helped to set up the decisive move.
“Scoring this awesome goal against Limpopo was definitely the highlight of my season thus far.”
Born and raised in PE, the levelheaded 21-year-old said he felt no added pressure to perform when playing in front of the cameras during televised matches.
“I just play my heart out at every game like I have since I was nine years old.”
His personal motivation stemmed from the support of his coach, family and teammates, said Beqezi.
The former Newton Technical High learner acknowledged that victory was ultimately not about individual performances but rather about team effort.
“The Madibaz have an amazing team spirit and we all fought till the end.”
Beqezi said their hard work would continue as they focused on booking their semi-final berth.
“The perfect result for us would be to lift the trophy at the end of the season.”
