On ‘Unexpected’ Baakens River Fish Species and Stromatolites

The next Know Your Bay series of talks will take place on Monday 30 September at Bayworld from 17h30 for 18h00 and showcase some of our natural heritage of our bay.

Prof Nadine Strydom, from the Department of Zoology of Nelson Mandela University, will do an input on “Ecology of the Baakens River and Estuary with emphasis on fishes and their future”. She has studied the Baakens river and its evolution for the past decade and found fish species there were never found before.

Dr Gavin Rishworth, also from the Department of Zoology, will introduce on the “Treasure in sludge: our Bay’s living heritage boosted by its “newest” habitat, the stromatolites”. Stromatolites are the most ancient forms of life on Earth, and they have been discovered to occur in our bay only a few years ago.
