Numsa Workers’ Strike Continues

6 July 2011 By Alan Straton

Many National Union of Metal Workers (Numsa) members braved torrential downpours to gather outside their employers’ gates as part of a nationwide strike. The approximately 170 000 Numsa workers are demanding a 13 percent wage increase.

Numsa regional spokesperson Patrick Sewu said the strike came into full effect on Monday and that there was a total stayaway by all Numsa members from work in East London.

“Most of our workers are in debt. They will want to go back to work to be able to pay their bills. We want them to continue with the strike and not worry,” said Sewu.

Kevin Hustler, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber said; “The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber urges all those involved in the strike to consider the reputational damage done to South Africa as a stable production location. This could have serious repercussions in terms of our ability to attract future investment going forward, impacting our global competitiveness.

“Many Business Chamber members have already been affected by the strike, and it is likely that many more will feel the effects over the coming days. The longer this strike action continues, the more likely it is that the operations of manufacturers will be halted.

“Our members in the manufacturing sector have expressed grave concern over the current strike’s possible effects, especially in terms of the worldwide perception of the viability of industry in South Africa regarding labour costs and flexibility. This is a very real threat to future investment in this region.

“Any short-term gains in pay and working conditions resulting from strikes could be offset by an increase in job losses in the future.

The strike is, at this stage, indefinite. Its full effects will only be determined by its length. As a Business Chamber, we promote economic growth and represent the interests of the local business community. We sincerely hope that negotiations will continue and that all parties will come to an understanding. These types of wage disputes need to be efficiently and effectively handled.”
