NORTHERN CAPE – The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Major General Joey Kers, participated in the panel discussions on gender-based violence that was held at OFM Church in Galeshewe, Kimberley on 25 November 2021.
The event was hosted by the Provincial Government of the Northern Cape under the theme “I am my brother’s keeper” and was attended by the Premier of the Northern Cape, Dr Zamani Saul who was accompanied by members of his Executive Council.
They were also joined by the newly elected Mayor of Frances Baard District, Mr Kagisho Dante Sonyoni, who welcomed everyone to the event.
The occasion coincides with the launch of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign Against the Abuse of Women and Children that usually takes place between the 25th of November and 10th December every year.
Gender-based violence has escalated to the extremely high levels in South Africa over the past years and has led to the President, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa declaring it a second pandemic after Covid-19.
The official 2021 theme for this year’s campaign is “The year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke -16 Days of Activism – moving from awareness to accountability” and unlike in the past years where the event was launched with an awareness event, the Northern Cape Province decided to provide a platform for men to discuss ways in which this scourge could be eradicated.
Men are considered to be the main perpetrators behind gender-based violence and men such as Dr Saul, Major General Kers, Apostle Patrick Mokwena, Mr Tebogo Obusitse, Reverend Celani Mbele along with an ex-offender of gender-based violence, Mr Billy Pakathi were tasked with leading the discussions that later included ordinary men from the floor.
Let us all take a stand and say no to gender-based violence! End
