Join Port Elizabeth and MyPE in congratulating Mover and Shaker, Nompumelelo June Dweba from the Port of Ngqura:
As August, the month South Africa commemorates as Women’s Month draws to an end, Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has announced the appointment of Nompumelelo June Dweba, as new Port Manager at the Port of Ngqura.
Making the announcement at a briefing to stakeholders, TNPA Chief Executive Tau Morwe said Dweba’s appointment was in keeping with TNPA’s organisational transformation geared to align human resources competencies to ensure delivery on Transnet’s Market Demand Strategy (MDS). The MDS will see Transnet expand rail, port and pipeline infrastructure with a R300 billion capital investment programme over seven years.
The Port of Ngqura, a state-of-the-art marine facility 20 km east of Port Elizabeth, which was opened by President Jacob Zuma in March 2012 is packed with potential and geared for exponential growth.
The Port of Ngqura’s advantage over other ports in Africa is that it is a deep-water port with a depth of between 16m and 18m, which can accommodate the new generation container vessels. This would increase capacity for container volumes and attract additional transshipment cargo.
Construction of the Port of Ngqura has been one of the biggest projects of its kind on the continent and one of the largest undertaken in post-apartheid South Africa. To date TNPA has invested R10 billion in the development of the port which is operated by Transnet Port Terminals (TPT).
Morwe said TNPA was embarking on organization transformation to redefine the role of TNPA in terms of the National Ports Act No 12 of 2005 and to deliver on the MDS.
“Dweba has been appointed as Port Manager at Port of Ngqura at an exciting time. She will have a crucial role to play to contribute to the building of an economic infrastructure that will facilitate the movement of goods and reduce the cost of doing business.
“It is also noteworthy that Dweba’s appointment takes place during Women’s Month when we pay tribute to the thousands of women who took pary in the in the struggle for human rights, freedom and equality.
“I have every confidence that she will bring to the job her passion, experience and skills within an environment which is conducive to development,” said Morwe.
Before her appointment as Port Manager, Dweba was employed by the National Department of Transport as acting Directror: Maritime Industry Development and Economic Regulation.
She holds a BA degree from the University of Transkei, a BEd degree from Unisa, a BPhil in Maritime Studies (Honours) from the University of Stellenbosch and is surrently finalising a master’s dissertation towards the MPhil (Martitime Economics).
Dweba serves as communication and marketing manager of Women Managers of Southern and Eastern Africa (Womesa).
She has presented papers on the role of women in the maritime infustry and has also attended several maritime conferences, including an international seminar on port logistics in Antwerp.
She has also presented papers at the African ports and harbours conference and chaired and presented several papers at the conference of the the Port Management Association of Eastern & Southern Africa.
