Pupils in Motherwell NU 29 area have to travel long distances to schools within the Motherwell area, which are far, as there is no school in their immediate neighborhood.
Families living in different informal settlement areas were relocated to the NU 29 area, which consists of RDP housing.
The Motherwell NU29 area is rapidly developing, yet there is currently no school in the area.
The principal, Asanda Ntsupa, of Vukanibantu Primary School which is situated in NU 5, Motherwell has applied to the Department of Education numerous times for scholar transportation. She is yet to receive a response in this regard.
I have made contact with the District Director, Nyathi Ntsiko about the need for scholar transport but he stated that he could not help me and referred me to the Department of Transport instead.
The Department of Transport informed me that it was awaiting the allocation of the 2013/2014 budget in April.
Currently a community member transports these children to school in his truck. Parents pay him R50 each for this service.
These are poor families, mostly dependent on state grants and who are struggling to make ends meet.
This is a violation of the children’s rights to basic education.
The DA will continue to fight for the rights of these children in accessing quality education.
