Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism CEO Mandlakazi Skefile got off to an early start on Wednesday morning to bid farewell to an enthusiastic Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) choir that departed on the first flight out of the city to participate at the Ninth World Symposium on Choral Music in Puerto Madryn, Argentina.
The 52-member choir, under the direction of Junita Lamprecht-van Dijk, was selected from 119 choirs, from 40 countries, spanning five continents.
“The NMMU choir members – each and everyone – are ambassadors of our city. Over the years, they have performed extensively in and out of South Africa. Their eclectic repertoire of isiXhosa songs to more conventional western items, from pop to classical have wowed thousands of listeners in Chicago, New York, Italy, United Kingdom and now South America. Image what that does for us as a destination?
“I got up before 5am this morning, just to let the choir and Junita know that we, at NMBT, are all very proud of them and that they should at all times, fly the Nelson Mandela Bay flag high and live the Nelson Mandela Bay brand,” said Skefile, who jived with the choir in front of curious travellers before they departed.
The international choir symposium is held every three years in a different country on a different continent.
The choir is due back in Nelson Mandela Bay from their whirlwind trip next week.
