NMMU Business School Backs Plastic Bottle Cap Project

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Business School has thrown its weight behind NMB Municipality’s “Plastic Bottle Cap” Project.

Part of National Recycling Week, which runs from 14-19 September, the aim is to encourage the School’s students to collect as many plastic bottle caps as possible. These are then placed into 2-litre soft drink bottles and dropped off at collection points. For every full bottle of tops received, local firm, Timber Solutions, will donate R1 to an organisation providing shelter to women and children affected by domestic violence. The tops will then be recycled and manufactured into plastic furniture.

The school has appointed full-time MBA student Grant Greyling to run the project on its behalf. “It’s an important project for a number of reasons,” he says. “Clearly, the domestic violence shelter will benefit. But the business school is also firm in its commitment to the environment. Joining the “Plastic Bottle Cap” Project is about encouraging us as students to think about giving back and also about committing to sustainability in our business lives.”

NMMU Business School recently opened its new R116m “green” building, which is the first university facility in the country and only building in Port Elizabeth to receive a Four-Star design rating from the Green Building Council of South Africa. The Business School is also a signatory to the UN Principles of Responsible Management Education and incorporates management awareness into all programmes.

Greyling says he has also reached out to other faculties at NMMU, with links to the Business School. There are drop-off points at both the Business School and the University’s South Campus.
