NMMU all set for end-of-year examinations

25 November 2016 By Alan Straton

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is all set for the 2016 final exams, with the first session kicking off today.

The three-week long examination period is the culmination of the University’s student-centred Academic Completion Plan that has enabled students to complete the academic year.

Despite this being a particularly difficult year for both staff and students, the University has remained committed to ensuring the successful completion of the academic year.

This follows six weeks of second semester teaching lost as a result of the inability to access campuses because of the protracted #FeesMustFall shutdown.

With the Academic Completion Plan having been implemented mainly from the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium, this venue will also serve as the main exam venue as its existing security protocols speak to the needs of NMMU staff and students.

Without compromising the integrity and quality of the exams, staff have worked hard to compress the remainder of the academic year, with some modules having their final assessments converted from exams to continuous assessment or assignments.

Due to the interruptions that has seen an extension of the current academic year, students were afforded an opportunity to either write exams in the November/December period and/or in January 2017.

More than 1800 examinable modules have been reduced to more than 730 that will be written over two sessions – from 25 November 2016 to 15 December 2016 and/or 9 January 2016 to 24 January 2016.

Students’ decisions were communicated through an online link, with about 70% of students having responded by the cut-off date.

Of those, nearly 60% opted to write in the session starting tomorrow, while nearly 13% chose to write next year.

The University is aware that some students may have experienced difficulty in successfully indicating their choices and has factored this in, with provision made to accommodate those that could not make their selection during both exam sessions.

Given the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium’s strict security protocols, students need to be at the venue at least two hours before the start of their exam and be equipped with students or, in the absence of this, provide original identification in order to obtain the necessary documentation at a mobile station. The University’s normal exam rules will still apply.

The January exam session will include any re-examinations emanating from the November/December exam period. Re-examinations for exams written in this session will take place from 9 to 17 February 2017.

Exam results will be communicated before the University breaks for the Summer recess.

The University is doing all that it can to ensure that the 2016 academic year is successfully completed and that the challenges faced this year do not adversely impact on the start of the next academic year in February.

NMMU wishes all students the best in their exams and thanks them for their patience in light of this trying period.
