Dear Editor
It has been a month since the start of the academic year, but hundreds of learners in Nelson Mandela Bay have not attended a single day of school due to the Eastern Cape government’s collapsing scholar transport programme.
Today, 15 February 2024, at a Special Council meeting in Gqeberha, Nelson Mandela Bay’s ANC/EFF/NA/PA coalition government proved that they feel nothing for the plight of our children when they refused to debate a DA Motion of Exigency regarding the scholar transport crisis.
In our motion we requested that the municipality must have an urgent engagement with the Eastern Cape MEC for Transport to commit that the scholar transport programme will be available to our children from next week. The ANC-led collection refused to debate the issue.
Last month parents and learners took to the streets of Gqeberha to protest against the unavailability of scholar transport. At the time it was reported in the media that a spokesperson of the provincial department of education confirmed that the department is working with the department of transport to find a solution. Since then, nothing has materialised.
Our children are being robbed of their education but the current coalition government refuses to even get involved in an engagement that could make a material difference in alleviating their plight.
We are committed to rescuing the learners of Nelson Mandela Bay from an uncaring government that is unwilling to fight to secure their futures.
Regards
Cllr Jason Grobbelaar
