This morning EPA, ASA and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality celebrated an incredible partnership started 10 years ago and which is now – like a great savings account – bearing interest upon interest.
A germ of an idea between Mike Mbambanani and Alan Taylor 10 years ago led to the dominance of Nelson Mandela Bay over premium and grass roots athletics events. From a small idea the NMB Legacy project now hosts 7 road running events annually in areas of the metro such as Motherwell, Gelvandale, Colchester, Kariega/Despatch and Summerstrand.
At the celebrations officials from Athletics South Africa expressed their thanks to organisers for starting at grass roots level and developing athletes along the way along with hosting World Class events on World Class tracks.
In the celebrations was a salutary lesson for all politicians – consistency, long term vision and commitment to a combined outcome that uplifts ALL involved is the way to go when showcasing and hosting events anywhere.
Overnight Success is NEVER overnight but rather the result of careful planning over many years.
ASA in fact is so impressed with the DREAM TEAM that they announced the bringing to Gqeberha of the Festival of Cross Country, a possible Marathon and the return of major Track and Field events to Gqeberha, showing that a winning dedicated Dream Team always gets MORE!
