The spellbinding and legendary South African musician, Nibs van der Spuy will be launching his first ever ‘Live’ DVD entitled, “Live at the Vagabond Café” in Port Elizabeth. Not only will it be a ‘not to be missed’ live show this summer, but Nibs will also treat local guitarists to a free guitar workshop before the show.
Nibs van der Spuy is regarded as an acoustic guitar legend of Southern Africa – a musician and lyricist whose songs are said to render audiences around the world to goose bumps and tears and warm their hearts with their subtle Latin rhythms. After a packed and much loved show last year, Nibs is so happy to return to Port Elizabeth!
Nibs’ DVD was recorded over two magical nights in December 2009 and this almost 2 hour concert features Nibs in a beautiful intimate setting, tucked away in the luscious Kwa-Zulu North Coast.
The DVD features friends, such as Farryl Purkiss who guests on a heart rendering version of Hank Williams’ “Tramp on the Street.” Long time drummer / percussionist, Gareth Gale also joins Nibs for some riveting duo interaction. There is also a wonderful ‘Bonus’ section with an in depth interview with Nibs and two rare archival clips featuring Guy Buttery and Piers Faccini.
Filmed up close with three cameras and the audio sound digitally captured, this is the closest you get to experience an organic Nibs van der Spuy Concert first hand.

The workshop will be 90 minutes, aimed at all playing levels. It will cover various styles, techniques and inspire all guitarists to take their playing to new creative heights.
Nibs van der Spuy was born in Benoni, South Africa on 20 February 1966.
In 1993, Nibs formed, “Landscape Prayers”, which played an acoustic blend of Instrumental World music. In 1995 they were signed to the Sheer label and released 4 critically acclaimed albums before going separate ways in 2003. The bands’ 1997 album “Bush Telegraph”, 1999 album “Transmigration Man” and 2003’s “Lontana”, were all nominated at the South African Music Awards (SAMA) for Best Instrumental album.
Nibs’ versatility to cross pollinate various musical styles, from, African, Classical, Celtic, World, Maskanda, Indian and folk can be fully appreciated on his first International release, ‘Beautiful Feet’ (2007). It has received rave reviews from the London Guardian to the Sydney Herald, and in May 2007, was album of the month in 4 major German publications.
His latest offering, “A HOUSE ACROSS THE RIVER” was released in April 2010 in South Africa.
