Human Settlements to hand over houses in PE
Human Settlements Deputy Minister Zou Kota-Fredericks and Eastern Cape Human Settlements MEC Babalo Madikizela will, on Tuesday, officially hand over houses in Walmer, Port Elizabeth.
The department said the Walmer Enhanced People’s Housing Process (PHP) is the flagship project in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro utilising the cooperatives methodology in the delivery of houses.
“The project encapsulates the principles of community participation and the institutionalisation of the participatory approach in delivering integrated sustainable human settlements.
“This is an informal settlement upgrading project made up of 2 209 sites. These families have been living without formal services or housing and many are still using the bucket sanitation system.”
The department said the handover of the Walmer project, also known as Umzi wase Gqebera, will be preceded by a massive clean-up campaign in the area on Monday, 1 April 2019.
Kota-Fredericks will lead the clean-up campaign, supported by members of the greater Walmer community, the Department of Environmental Affairs as well as members of local and provincial government. – SAnews.gov.za
