Ahead of an exciting day of Mandela Day outreach initiatives happening around the Bay, Nelson Mandela Day Tourism (NMBT) got the day off to an inspirational start when the team hosted a special Flag Hoisting Ceremony at the Donkin. Public were able to witness the raising of a special edition Nelson Mandela Centenary Flag measuring 7m by 12m that will fly below the South African flag on the 65m flagpole.

The symbolic raising of the Centenary Flag paved the way forward for an ongoing initiative known as “Mandela Fridays”, where the Centenary Flag will be hoisted every week in honour of Madiba, also aimed at building a culture of humanity and kindness amongst both residents and visitors of the city.

“As a destination named after Nelson Mandela, we feel it is our duty to celebrate his centenary well beyond today. We will continue our efforts to spread the true spirit and essence of Madiba through Mandela Fridays.” Said NMBT CEO: Mandlakazi Skefile after the event.

Showing commitment through action, NMBT has pledged its support to Andisa Liba, originally from this city, who was selected to join the global Trek4Mandela Campaign. Currently participating to summit Mount Kilimanjaro today to raise funds for the purchase of sanitary towels for over 500 000 underprivileged school girls around the country who cannot afford them and often end up staying absent from school due to menstrual related challenges. Andisa has chosen to support two local schools in New Brighton as her beneficiaries (Molefe Secondary and Kamma Primary school), who will receive the much-needed sanitary towels.

Commenting on the continued efforts to support and celebrate the Mandela Centenary, Ms Skefile added: “Today we witnessed a historic moment in our city with the raising of the Centenary Flag. But today we are also here to call on our residents to support the Trek4Mandela Campaign, by purchasing and donating sanitary towels at any of the allocated drop off points NMBT has made available around the Bay and by donating to the pledge line. Let’s make a concerted effort and keep our girls in school!”

Andisa Liba has a SMS pledge line for the public to donate to the initiative, whilst standing a chance of winning a 2 night stay at Praixa de Peixe in the tropical island of Macaneta in Mozambique.

To stand a chance to win, SMS ANDISA to 42513. All proceeds go to Caring4 Girls an Imbumba Foundation initiative. Competition closes on 20 July 2018 and the winner will be announced on 1 August 2018.

In addition, NMBT has availed various visitor information offices around NMB as drop off points for sanitary towels and cash donations. Drop off points are at: The Airport, Donkin Reserve, The Boardwalk, Uitenhage and the NMBT Head Office.

Additional drop off points are as follows:

  • Transnet has various boxes throughout their buildings for donations
  • Transnet Fishing Competition Day will also be a consolidated collection point
  • Shoprite/I-Management Events have collection boxes and drop off points
  • Bay FM Community Radio station
  • Kingfisher FM Community Radio station

The Mandela Centenary Campaign will continue throughout this year, with Andisa returning from her trek and conducting the handover of sanitary towels to the beneficiaries around Women’s Day in August. The public are encouraged to show their continued throughout the campaign with support and donations.
