Nelson Mandela Bay to launch a groundbreaking study for a climate resilient metro

On Wednesday 24 January 2024, a groundbreaking study for a climate resilient metro will be launched.

The city of Nelson Mandela Bay was chosen by the Presidential Climate Commission as a site for the development of climate resilient economies to be rolled out and replicated across the country and the region.

The aim of the project is to develop and embed a multi-stakeholder Climate Resilient Development Strategy Framework (and Action Plan) for Nelson Mandela Bay by February/March 2025.

Project objectives:

  1. Establish a baseline and trend analysis of challenges and opportunities (social, economic, environmental, and governance) that the Nelson Mandela Bay metropole will face due to climate change.
  2. Develop a theoretical framework of climate resilience development pathways based on the work of the IPCC, PCC, other coastal metro’s plans (City of Cape Town and Ethekwini specifically), and by targeted engagement with stakeholders that represent key sectors in the Metro. This first level CRDP will be tested and expanded on during broad stakeholder engagement.
  3. Identify and map existing plans and initiatives across the metro and elsewhere that serve to build a climate resilient NMB and from which lessons on adaptation, mitigation, and pathways can be extracted and possibly replicated and scaled up across the metro.
  4. Engage with stakeholders across the metro (and with external stakeholders that impact the metro) in developing a draft framework strategy and action plan for a Climate-Smart Nelson Mandela Bay.
  5. Identify key inflection points along the resilience pathways and seek to embed and institutionalise the necessary tools and mechanisms that serve to prepare and build a climate resilient metro by 2055.
