Nelson Mandela Bay Pride Fringe Events

On 23 September Pride Fringe events will include; Day-Zees in Parliament Street will be hosting the King and Queen of PRIDE 2011 at 7:30pm, with a charity auction and a dance party. The King and Queen of Pride contest will feature The Prince and Princess from Port Elizabeth – Chris Goosen and Liyanna Basini and the following perfomers; Darren Green from KFM, Chey, PLAZM,(hip-hop crew), Jay Dee, Quinton, Scarlett, Chris Goosen (fire dancer), Blanche Upton. The One in Nine Campaign will be holding a discussion forum  “What’s in a name?  Language, identities and the politics of resistance”. DJ Fletcher will be playing at n_mb city projects’, Concrete Zoo in the old SAB building.

Saturday the 24th September at 1:00 pm sees the atart of the first Nelson Mandela Bay Pride Parade from Stanley Street (Richmond Hill) across Cape Road, down Robson Street, and up Parliament Street to the stage outside Day-Zees church.

The Parade will be followed by a street party at 2:30pm with free live music, featuring; The New Afroteens, David Magowan, Thabz Soulstar, Darren Green from KFM, Lola Fine, Jooma Mize, Terry Tiger Victor, Kevin Ellis, Sam Marais, Mbuzobuciko, Way WordSun, Taryn De Koning, Odidiva, Monique Walker, Will Jensen, Wesley Thomas Chippett , Ziyanda Yono and Ebrahim – finishing at around 9:00 pm. Afterwards Day-Zees, 52 Parliament Street, and DnE will be open to party the night away.

Many local and national businesses have donated prizes for the Prince and Princesses, and King and Queen of PRIDE. Local hotels and Bed and Breakfasts are donating free weekends for Prize winners, these include The Lemon3Lodge, The Steytlerville Karoo theatrical Hotel, George Sorensen, Gulu Private Reserve, Starlight Photography, Ultimate Hair Stylists-Greenacres, Tradouw Guest House, Barrydale, The Hopefield Country House and Guest Farm – Addo. The Paxton hotel has offered complimentary accommodation for some of the performers. Continental Cars are providing Minis, and George Sorensen is loaning his open-top mini to transport the King and Queen of PRIDE.

The theme “Born this Way” was chosen to help spread tolerance and understanding. NMB Pride are advocates of tolerance and diversity and raising awareness about so called “corrective rape” and HIV and Aids. Ndumie Funda from Luleki Sizwe will present a talk on “corrective rape”. HIV and Aids specialist, Dr Nortje will talk about HIV and AIDS.
