The Port Elizabeth Businesswomen’s Association (BWA) has crowned six outstanding businesswomen as the best in their sector in the prestigious annual BWA/Investec 2016 Regional Business Achievers Awards (RBAA), held at the Boardwalk Hotel & Convention Centre last night (Tuesday 14 June 2016).

Selected for their inspiring accomplishments from a pool of 18 impressive finalists (three in each category), the 2016 winners are:

  • EMERGING ENTREPRENEUR: Lana Field – Epic Work and Travel
  • ENTREPRENEUR: Elana van Rooyen – Continental Butchery and Deli
  • SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR: Berenice Rose – Unity in Africa Foundation
  • PROFESSIONAL: Pumeza Bono – Pumeza Bono Attorneys Inc.
  • CORPORATE: Candice Parker – Nashua PE
  • GOVERNMENT: Prof Elmarie Venter – NMMU

Nearly 500 guests applauded the winners and fellow nominees at the glamorous dinner event, a highlight on the region’s business calendar each year. Nominations are submitted from a wide range of industries and the women need not be BWA members to enter. The six winners are selected through an independent and audited judging process. Members of the judging panel represent a broad cross-section of highly respected leaders in business, government and civil society.

Michelle Brown, chairperson of BWA’s dynamic local branch, said the BWA’s mission is to promote opportunities to support, connect and grow women in business.

“The prestigious annual RBAA acknowledge the economic and social impact of female entrepreneurs and professionals in the greater Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) region. We contribute so much, alongside men, and deserve to stop a moment to reflect on and celebrate our achievements,” she said. “The calibre of our phenomenal finalists is always exciting and inspiring as women increasingly employ their determination and creativity to meet the challenges of today’s working world.”

Cumesh Moodliar, regional head of Investec Private Bank and head of Banking (SA), said the organisation is proud of its relationship with the BWA PE branch and was proud to be the event’s main sponsor.

“We join hands with the BWA in recognising the calibre of women who have accomplished so much in today’s tough business environment. Congratulations to the nominees and finalists in the various categories, but also to all members of the BWA – not only for the work you do, but for your commitment to the Eastern Cape community. We need more ‘out of the ordinary’ role models like you and we salute your success.”

Ruellen Bateman, head of Marketing at Investec Private Bank, also applauded the finalists.

“We believe all leaders have one thing in common: ambition. And none more so than the exemplary challengers for this year’s Regional Business Achievers Award. Congratulations to all the women who are being recognised by the BWA, who continually find a way to go above and beyond in their professional endeavours.”

Inspiring keynote speaker at the Awards evening was Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, renowned for her leading role in the African fashion and clothing industry, and co-founder and vice chairperson of the philanthropic Motsepe Foundation.
