The stumbling block that most people hit when searching for sponsors is that most companies are willing to give product and shy away from giving cash. From a company perspective the reasons are pretty clear; it is easier to give product, more exposure, significant discount to retail value.
The fundraiser then sits with a dilemma – especially when the product given does not fit the intended purpose. The normal thing is then to ask someone else to buy the sponsored product and that invariably happens at a reduced price which could create negative marketing for the sponsor.
Ideally the person or instance looking for sponsorship needs to hold an auction of sponsored items which will create more exposure and greater opprtunity for higher prices, but, that demands a special skill set and more time from volunteers so is not always successful.
Faced with this dilemma and needing to raise funds for a tour of England by the Grey 1st XI – which recently represented the Eastern Province Schools in the National T20 Competition in Potchestroom during April 2016 – Grey Cricket Consultant, Dave Callaghan, established an auction web site to put sponsors, fundraisers and buyers together.
MyOffer.co.za came about to fill a specific need – as most useful sites and apps do – and is a charitable platform that connects fundraisers, shoppers with a cause, and partner businesses. MyOffer provides support to local fundraising initiatives.
The Grey High School Centrestage/Auction Evening is taking place on Saturday, 11 June 2016, at the Old Grey Club in Port Elizabeth and is one of a number of events planned to assist with the costs of sending the cricketers on tour.
The Grey High School 1st Cricket Team will be touring England for two weeks this year, from 19 June to 6 July 2016. During the tour the team will be playing against 11 top English Cricket Schools. Grey Cricket has a proud tradition of producing a number of S.A. Schools and Provincial players who have gone on to represent South Africa.
The tour starts off in Oxford on 21 June 2016 before going west to the Somerset region and then to the Land Districts area to play Sedbergh near Kendal. After the Sedbergh fixture Grey play Oundle in the Midlands, before spending the last week in Wimbledon, London.
Grey will play against the following eleven top English Schools in the fifteen days: Magdalen College, Wellington College, Millfield School (20 and 50 overs), Shrewsbury School, Oundle School, King’s School Macclesfield, Sedbergh School, Whitgift School (20 and 50 overs) and Dulwich College. All these schools are very good cricketing schools, with which Grey High School has had long term relationships with over the years.
The team has a blend of youth and experience with a number of Grade 10’s, two SA Squad players – Matthew Breetzke and Lutho Sipamla – whilst Boxie Masterton, (Captain) and Dylan Smith will play significant roles as the senior players on tour.
The players will get a valuable opportunity to compare themselves with players from similar cricketing schools in England which will be a good bench mark going forward in their careers.
The team will spend the last two days visiting all the tourist attractions in London before flying landing back in Port Elizabeth on 6 July 2016.
