National Learn-to-Swim Pilot Programme to Empower Previously Disadvantaged Communities with Essential Water Safety Skills

SAIMI’s Initiative Aims to Bridge the Gap in Basic Swimming and Water Safety Training for Grade 6-11 Learners.

Gqeberha, Eastern Cape – 20 October 2023 – The South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) is thrilled to announce the launch of the National Learn-to-Swim Pilot programme, a groundbreaking initiative focused on skills development and water safety awareness in previously disadvantaged communities. This programme is specially designed for Grade 6-11 learners hailing from schools where basic swimming is not a part of the regular curriculum.

The National Learn-to-Swim programme sets its sights on addressing the critical need for basic swimming and water safety training among individuals residing in areas with limited access to such facilities. SAIMI, as the implementing agent of this programme, will collaborate with reputable accredited service providers to deliver comprehensive training.

The primary goal is to reduce drowning incidents and simultaneously increase the number of proficient swimmers who are well-informed about the maritime sector and its related activities.

Swimming is an essential life skill, and the National Learn-to-Swim programme aims to instil this skill early in life, nurturing a community of competent and capable swimmers. This national initiative will begin with a pilot programme, commencing in Cape Town on the 20th of October 2023, followed by Johannesburg on the 28th of October 2023.

With support from the National Skills Fund (NSF), a key enabler of skills development in South Africa, SAIMI endeavours to effect positive change in the lives of young learners, thereby nurturing a new generation of adept swimmers and dedicated maritime industry enthusiasts.
