The regional league ladies team: Highbury ladies and Sasol Provincial League ladies team: Mustangs Ladies both from PEFA came out on top in this year’s Mayor’s Cup soccer competition.
Highbury came close to making it a double losing out in the league by a narrow 2 points to Continental Express. In the Mayor’s Cup they made no mistake running out convincing winners.
In the quarter final Highbury came up against NMMU running away with a 5-0 victory, and in the semi-final they played against an up and coming Bodene Shatterproof side. Highbury once again proved to strong for their opponents winning it 4-1. African Chiefs came up against the league winners Continental Express in their semi-finals and managed to overcome the strong outfit by means of penalties.
The final turned out to be a bit of a one sided affair with Highbury giving African Chiefs a hefty 6-1 beating. Goal scorers in the final for Highbury were Nomaphelo Ngcwembe who scored a hatrick, Yolisa Makalima who scored a brace and Zikhona Nogqala wrapping up the scoring.
In the Sasol League it was a much tighter affair with Mustangs beating Manchester Babes with relative ease before coming up against Golden Stars in the semi-finals. In the last game of the league Golden Stars beat Mustangs 1-0 so this return game was always going to be a tight affair. Mustangs and Golden Stars played to a 1-1 score line with Mustangs taking it on penalties and winning 4-3 Zara van Haaght was outstanding as the stand in goalkeeper saving two penalties.
The final saw a repeat of last year’s Mayor’s Cup final with Mustangs coming up against City Lads once again. This game was very exciting and did not go according to the script as the heavy favourites to retain the title were City Lads. Mustangs were up 1-0 at halftime with a well taken goal from Courtney Nanan. In the second half Mustangs hit City Lads with two extremely well taken goals in quick succession by Genevieve Adams and Lauren Adams. The latter took the third goal excellently showing great technique slipping it past the goalkeeper into the bottom right corner from just outside the 18 yard area. This saw City Lads fight back with great determination to bring the score-line to 3-3 at the final whistle. Zara van Haaght once again came up trumps and brought home the victory for Mustangs with a 4-2 penalty shootout score-line.
This saw PEFA winning the double in this year Mayors Cup competition by capturing both sections Regional and Provincial. Well done to both teams, it was well deserved at the end of a really tough season.
