Municipality to Tighten Security after Threats to Workers

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will be tightening security tomorrow after threats against non-striking workers increased during the course of the day.

This step came after approximately 90% of the employees of the local government institution turned up for work on the sixth day of industrial action.

One of the cases that the South African Police Services are investigating at this stage is the intimidation of patients at the Walmer/Gqebera Clinic this afternoon when approximately ten South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) members allegedly forced their way into the building.

They allegedly forced patients to leave the facility by threatening them with knob kieries.

Security removed protestors from the Banking Hall at the Korsten Customer Care Centre and deployed a similar tactic at Walmer Customer Care Centre.

Claims attributed to Samwu leaders that the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Scientific Services did not function, were exposed as the spreading of deliberate lies since the laboratory was functioning as workers received water samples and also had an important meeting at 10:00 am.
