A new prepaid smart water meter developed by Port Elizabeth-based start-up Hedge SA has received two awards at the recent SITA Awards event held in Durban.
The company is first runner up in the GovTech 2019 government hackathon and was also recognised as a leading digital innovator at the SITA Awards.
The GovTech hackathon was an invite-only event.
The event pitted Hedge SA against 18 other teams in the quest to find innovative ways to tackle the country’s water crisis.
Their product is a smart water meter with the capabilities of leakage detection and water quality monitoring. It is suitable for rollout at municipal level using existing household meters
The criteria for receiving the Innovator award was that the recipients should have introduced new methods, ideas, or products that are contributing in one way or the other to the delivery of a bold, new, digital world.
The awards ceremony was held in conjunction with the GovTech 2019 conference which is around the promotion of Industry 4.0 and digital transformation in South Africa.
Zain Imran, who is the Co-founder of Hedge SA said: “It feels amazing to win such awards! It makes you finally feel like the product you are developing actually has some value and potential.”
The company has been working on developing a prototype and commercialising their smart water meter at the Propella Business Incubator for the past few months.
