Mr PE uber(Ironman)

23 July 2019 By Alan Straton

The Standard Bank 5150 Nelson Mandela Bay set to take place on 24 November 2019 will see beginners and more seasoned athletes take on triathlon at a manageable distance. For the first time, the Standard Bank 5150 Nelson Mandela Bay will see past and present Sun Boardwalk Mr PE uberMANn finalists take on the Nelson Mandela Bay course as two teams in the FUNTRI distance.

The Sun Boardwalk Mr PE uberMANn is an annual competition aimed at guys between the ages of 18 and 30 residing in Port Elizabeth who will make a difference in the community through supporting various initiatives. The Sun Boardwalk Mr PE uberMANn mainly supports the Domestic Animal Care and the Khayalethu Children’s Home.

The competition sees 12 finalists working with and competing against each other to take the title of Mr PE uberMANn. The prestigious title is held in high esteem and the winner will hold the title for one year in which he works at making a difference in the Port Elizabeth community by taking part in and representing the brand at local events.

The 2019 Sun Boardwalk Mr PE uberMANn competition came to an end at the Boardwalk Hotel Convention Centre on June 8th, when Chad Durheim was selected as the new Mr PE uberMANn for the year.

Jon-Paul Raper, Mr PE uberMANn of 2017 says, “the aim of the title is to embrace responsibility and encourage a positive impact through community activities. It is not a modelling competition. The title carries the full weight and responsibility of the qualifying criteria, as well as the expectations of all the sponsors involved. Past Mr PE’s have undoubtedly been much needed role models to the youth of the region.”

The Standard Bank 5150 Nelson Mandela Bay marks the conclusion of the 5150 African Triathlon Series and comprises of two different distances to try out. The Olympic distance includes a 1.5km swim, a 40km bike and a 10km run. In 2017, the FUNTRI distance was added to encourage newcomers to the sport and it consists of a 400m swim, a 20km bike and a 5km run which are ideal distances for an introduction to triathlon.

“IRONMAN runs world famous races that challenges athletes to push themselves over and above their comfort zones. We have seen how big of a role it plays in the Port Elizabeth community and how it has benefitted the sport scene of the bay. The Mr PE uberMANn contestants believe in healthy living and lifestyle and we are excited to take this challenge and joining the heroes of the city as we all compete in the Standard Bank 5150 Nelson Mandela Bay,” says Jon-Paul Raper.

The race will be between the current Mr PE UberMANn finalists and former winners. The first team will consist of Matthew Harris, Nicholas Smith and Chad Durheim and the second team Ofentse Boloko, Marco Venter and Jon-Paul Raper. An exciting clash between current and old.

Be sure to root for the Mr PE uberMANn guys on the 24th of November 2019 on King’s Beach and along Marine Drive. Entries for the Standard Bank 5150 Nelson Mandela Bay are open until 6 November 2019.
