More needs to be done for road safety as multiple truck pileup claims lives

22 October 2020 By Port Elizabethan

Dear MyPE

The Democratic Alliance is deeply saddened by the unnecessary loss of life following a multiple vehicle pileup on the N10 between Golden Valley and Cookhouse earlier today. At least three trucks are said to have been involved in the collision.

The road is notorious for the number of motor vehicle accidents that occur, and more needs to be done to ensure the safety of road users.

Road infrastructure also needs to be upgraded to accommodate the ever-increasing number of trucks transporting goods.

The N10 is one of the nine routes that was earmarked for the initial 24-hour traffic law enforcement project of Transport MEC Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe, which was supposed to launch at the beginning of the month, but which has still failed to get off the ground.

Traffic is being diverted and motorists travelling from Port Elizabeth have been advised to take the Long Hope turnoff and then join the R63 towards Cookhouse, where they will then be able to rejoin the N10 and continue with their journey.

I will be submitting questions to the Department relating to the accident and will be requesting clarity on what caused the accident.

I will also be following up with the MEC to request details as to why her Department has still not launched the 24-hour traffic law enforcement project, despite her promises that the project would have started on 1 October.

Regards
