Dear Editor
The DA in the Eastern Cape held our first provincial council meeting since our elective congress in February this year.
The Provincial Council reaffirmed its commitment to the DA’s Moonshot Pact and has committed to pulling out all the stops to ensure an historic election result in 2024.
The Provincial Council expressed concern at the unacceptably high levels of unemployment and poverty in the province. Concerns were also raised at the high rates of violent crime, which are spiralling out of control with no end in sight and no plans from government.
The Eastern Cape is facing several pressing challenges that impact the livelihoods of its residents. These challenges include, among others, high crime rates, a collapsing economy, high unemployment, especially among the youth, and failing local government. Residents are also facing a cost-of-living crisis, unreliable provision of electricity and water, failing healthcare and education, poor road and rail infrastructure, and a wide range of societal issues.
The Provincial Council is pleased with the performance of the DA governed Kouga Municipality as well as the Coalition Government in Nelson Mandela Bay under Mayor Retief Odendaal. Both Kouga and NMB give the people of the Eastern Cape hope that a future under a DA government is possible.
The 2024 national and provincial government elections present a unique opportunity for the people of the Eastern Cape to place our province on a pathway to prosperity.
The DA in the Eastern Cape is working on a situational analysis that will identify the underlying factors contributing to the challenges that residents face.
The document will be used to inform strategies and interventions that can be deployed to address these challenges. It will focus on how key interventions can enhance the province’s economic development, improving the livelihoods of its residents, and promoting sustainable development.
The DA is committed to fighting for the residents of the province, and to take the necessary steps that will realise its true potential.
Regards
Andrew Whitfield MP
DA EC Provincial Leader
