SOUTH AFRICA, October 2026. With warmer weather and longer evenings, South Africans are packing picnic baskets, stocking up on padkos for road trips, browsing weekend markets and filling their snack cupboards. MK Kosher South Africa is marking the season by highlighting the local farms and food brands that now display its symbol, and by showing shoppers how simple it is to check that a product on the shelf really is certified.
Many households check labels every time they shop. Producers who make it onto those shopping lists can find new opportunities both locally and overseas. MK Kosher South Africa connects these two groups: it provides Kosher certification that consumers can trust and that manufacturers can use when they enter export markets.
Local Brands Carrying the MK Symbol
MK Kosher South Africa has announced a number of local certifications over the last twelve months, and together they show how broad the country’s Kosher range has become.
In October 2025, Schoonbee Landgoed received MK Kosher certification for several of its products. The family farm sits in the Loskop Valley in Limpopo. It was founded in 1971, now spans more than 2,500 hectares, and concentrates on grapes, citrus and exotic game breeding. The certified range covers cold-pressed Pure Juices made from oranges, mandarins and lemons, Naartjie Chips made from dehydrated citrus slices, Crunchies made with oats, golden syrup and coconut, and dehydrated fruits such as grapes. Fruit juice and dried citrus suit warm spring afternoons well, and Kosher shoppers will now see a symbol they know on the pack.
Cape Town’s Grumpy Snacks, recognised for its dry-roasted chickpea snacks, came on board in September 2025. Flavours include sea salt, chocolate-coated, and cinnamon and maple, and the products can be found at Takealot, Clicks, Wellness Warehouse, Dis-Chem and selected Checkers and Spar stores. According to MK Kosher South Africa, LIFT airline also serves Grumpy Snacks on its flights, so Kosher travellers have a certified snack on domestic routes.
Trigz, Ice Bombs, Tabu Foods and Chocolate Tree are among the other South African brands certified by MK Kosher. The agency’s reach also goes beyond the country’s borders: in January 2026 it added SITC Cocoa, a cocoa producer in Ivory Coast, to its network.
Three Ways to Verify a Product
MK Kosher South Africa suggests three easy steps for shoppers. Start by checking the packaging for the MK Kosher symbol. Next, look the product up in the Companies and Products section of the MK Kosher website, where certified companies and items can be searched. Finally, if a favourite product is missing from the shelves, ask the store to stock MK Kosher certified items.
The agency also runs a Kosher Alerts page. Whenever a labelling mistake comes to light, for example a product with an incorrect dairy or pareve marking, an alert is posted that sets out the correct status and confirms what corrective action was taken. A Newly Certified listing shows which companies have joined recently. These tools give families a current record to rely on instead of memory or hearsay.
The Certification Process for South African Producers
MK Kosher South Africa works as a Kosher certification agency that examines every stage, from where ingredients come from to how products are made, to ensure each item meets Kosher standards. Its team combines rabbis with food and ingredient specialists. Rabbi Yossi Baumgarten, who has over 40 years of experience in Kosher certification, leads the South African operation.
The agency says it shapes its approach around each business. It takes time to understand a company’s story, applies strict standards without compromising the product, and keeps all information shared during the process strictly confidential. MK Kosher South Africa also positions itself as an affordable option: its fees are based on the cost of inspector visits plus a nominal administrative charge, with no hidden costs.
Global recognition is one of the main reasons producers seek certification. MK Kosher South Africa says its certification is accepted worldwide, allowing South African foods to be exported to Israel, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom without further questions. For a farm or snack company with export goals, Kosher certification in South Africa under an internationally recognised symbol can take away one more obstacle between the production line and an overseas buyer.
Over a Hundred Years of Kosher Expertise
MK Kosher was founded in Montreal and calls itself North America’s first Kosher agency. With more than a century of history, it says it has certified over 1,000 companies around the world. Its South African website states that it certifies more than 75,000 products globally.
This heritage means local producers gain access to a well-established international name while dealing with a team on the ground in South Africa. The agency says its goal is to blend long-held Kosher tradition with the tastes of today’s South African consumers, and it also helps clients who want to meet international food safety benchmarks.
A Wider Audience for the Kosher Symbol
MK Kosher South Africa notes that demand for Kosher products reaches far beyond the Jewish community. The agency cites 1.5 million Kosher customers and 3.5 million non-Jewish consumers who buy Kosher products, and says the Kosher food industry has become a $15 billion market over the past thirty years. Many people see a Kosher symbol as evidence of careful supervision and clear ingredient information, including assurance that a product contains no hidden dairy or animal-derived ingredients.
As a result, the MK symbol can help a local brand reach a far larger customer base than many expect.
How to Apply
Manufacturers, restaurants, caterers and takeout businesses can submit an application online and ask for a free quote and consultation. Businesses already certified by another agency are welcome to apply as well. The agency also takes applications from anyone interested in working as a mashgiach.
