Missionvale: Four firearms seized and suspects arrested

4 June 2020 By Alan Straton

PORT ELIZABETH – Excellent collaboration between the various policing units in the Mount Road Cluster resulted in the arrest of 3 suspects and the seizure of four firearms during the early hours of this morning, 04 June 2020.

It is alleged that at about 04:15 this morning, PE K9, PE Flying Squad and SAPS Algoa Park members acted on information received about firearms at a house in Arcadian Street in Missionvale. The information was immediately activated and the house was tactically penetrated. Three (3) 9mm pistols were found in the house. Three suspects aged 14, 18 and 27 were arrested for illegal possession of firearms.

While still processing the scene at the house, the alert members heard the sound of a firearm been cocked from a house on the opposite side of the road. They instantly reacted and found 7 occupants in the house. A 9mm pistol was found on the roof of the house. An enquiry docket was opened for further investigation.

Two of the firearms were reported stolen – one in Mount Road in June 2012 and the other in Port Alfred in February 1996. Ownership of the other two is yet to be established. All the firearms will be sent to ballistics for testing.

The 18 and 27 year old suspects were detained while the teenager was released in his guardian’s custody. They are expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court soon.

Mount Road Cluster Commander, Maj Gen Thembisile Patekile commended the teams for the arrests and confiscations. ‘In our efforts to turn the tide and save innocent lives, the seizure and confiscation of illegal firearms is a priority in certain hotspot areas. We will continue in our endeavours to remove illegal firearms from circulation as they are being used to commit serious and violent crimes. We appreciate the community’s assistance in providing information on these illegal firearms and urge them to continue to do so as we remain resolute in reducing the proliferation of illegal firearms,’ added Maj Gen Patekile.
