N. Miranda Grootboom says:
Nolubabalo Miranda Grootboom is an emerging Fine Artist/Visual Artist born in the city of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. In her 2dimensional work her mediums include ink, pen, paint and pastels and in 3Dimensional work it is mainly clay and plaster paris. She studied the N4 Introductory Art and Design Certificate in 2001 at PE College. From there in 2002 – 2005 she studied abd completed the National Diploma in Fine Art with modules such as Drawing, Painting, Fine Art Photography, Fine Art Ceramics and also majored in Sculpture at the now Nelson Mandela University.
At the completion of her studies she took on variius jobs during 2006 and started working for a local Arts and Teaching NGO from 2007 until 2019 as an administrative/project assistant/coordinator and artist interchangeably on various projects. During that time she found limited time to make art while working and took part in her first public art project in 2010 during the World Cup with 14 other artists under the same organisation. From November 2010 until June 2011 she participated in the Arts and Culture Development Support Learnership NQF level 4 through the same NGO she worked for and her very first opportunity to exhibit work came along in 2018 when she took part in an informal group exhibition held by a small local gallery under the theme My Culture, My Heritage. Since then she has created artworks as an individual artist and taken part in various small art projects and participating in commissions to create artworks.
In April to August 2022 she was part of a public art project headed by Abantu Development Agency to produce a sculptural piece that is installed as outdoor public art at the Athenaeum building in Central, Port Elizabeth.
Last year she was involved in creating art on commission for the Artbank PESP 3 programme and also took part in a project, through being placed to teach informal art classes to learners at Machiu Primary School for the Santam Child Art Competition 2023. She also was invited to conduct afternoon art classes at Malabar Primary School between August and October 2023.
Currently she is working and creating new art from home and steadily growing her client base who have purchased some of her artworks in the past and as recently as last year. She is available for various Art Projects, Commissions, Art Opportunities and also has an array of available artworks for purchase.
Her artworks are displayed on various social media platforms such as Facebook, X.com, LinkedIn and Artpal.com.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Some of my 2 and 3Dimensional artwork is abstract in terms of style, with the subject matter being the exploration of the complexity of human emotions whether it be joy, sadness, anxiety, depression, fear or peace. Those emotions are sometimes a reaction or trigger caused by the environment or circumstances we aee placed in at that given time. This either negatively or positively influences our general perspective and outlook on life. I would loosely term it motivational or inspirational art, because its purpose is to be relatable to the viewer, to portray human emotions in a way that the viewer can identify with what they see or the feeling it evokes that touches something about their own personal journey or through the journey of someone else.
Ultimately each piece seeks to inspire or motivate the viewer to rise above negative emotions that at times tend to engulf or to celebrate and cultivate what little positive emotion comes along. Looking at works by artists like Picasso, Matisse I then developed my own abstract style by doodling or abstracting drawing lines of varying thicknesses blending, letting them to overlap concentrating on contrast, movement and creating the illusion of depth. In addition to this, the interest I developed through the years to use pen or ink to draw on a white surface at times without planning in my 2dimensional work begins by doodling/playing around with lines, shapes and form to manipulate these to compose the image I want to portray. My work at times is straight abstract/doodle artwork or can be a mixture of realistic drawing with doodles/abstract shapes. My work been described as having a strong use of line whether bold and soft putting shapes together to form the composition with primary influences for my work coming from my environment, shapes and forms in nature, natural patterns, an interest in doodling abstract art, patterns also in nature and looking at work done by other artists to spark my ideas.
